Carlos and Roxana
Carlos was born in Quepos, on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica where he went to school and high school. Then he went to a three year college in Honduras (Zamorano), where he graduated as an agronomist. He worked for Consejo Nacional de Production in the county of Osa, Costa Rica in the first half of 1976. Then he was granted a scholarship to finish his college education at the University of Florida. Here he was taught the gospel by members of the church of Christ and put on Christ in baptism on November 14, 1976, in Florida. He graduated with a BS degree in Agriculture and was trained for the ministry in the local church program. Between 1978 and 1979, Carlos held his first college position at Universidad de Costa Rica and also worked for a year for the Cristo Rey church of Christ where he met Roxana and baptized her. Then he went back to the States for further training in Theology. He came back to Costa Rica for good in January 1981. He worked three years for ASBANA as supervisor of the Coconut Project. During this time he was trained as a plant breeder in the city of Wageningen, in Holland. In 1983, Carlos married Roxana and they entered the full time ministry and were further trained in Theology under Ronald McClung and his team at the Hatillo church, San José, Costa Rica. Their first two daughters were born in Costa Rica. Their third daughter was born in Juticalpa, Olancho, Honduras. Carlos and Roxana were missionaries in Honduras for 6 years beginning in 1988, where Carlos was director of Escuela Biblica Honduras. They came back to Costa Rica in 1993, due to the girls needing to attend elementary school. Back in Costa Rica, Carlos was the evangelist of the Hatillo church, from 1994 until 2005. During this time Carlos went back to college and got a Master's degree in Education, and eventually obtained half tenure as professor at Universidad Nacional. He became the evangelist at the Heredia church of Christ in 2005 and now he alternates university work with missionary work with support from the Bammel Church of Christ, Tx., and the St. Mary's County Church of Christ, Md. He was translator for Truth for Today from 1997 through 2008. Carlos and Roxana's philosophy of missions is very clear about them not becoming indispensable for the local church so that they can move on to start new congregations.
Roxana was born in San José, the capital of Costa Rica, the oldest of a family of six. She went to school and high school in this city. Her father and mother had been converted by Efraín Valverde and were members of the Cristo Rey church of Christ. She was baptized into Christ when she was 15 years old. She graduated from high school as a secretary. She worked briefly for the Ministry of Health. Then she married Carlos in 1983. Roxana was trained for the ministry under Ronaldo McClung and his team at the Hatillo church of Christ. She also went to college at Universidad Nacional and received her BA degree in Education, and became a certified teacher for elementary school. She worked in this capacity for seven years. This training and experience resulted in Roxana becoming the ideal Sunday school director for the different congregations where she has served. Today Roxana is the mother of three adult girls and the grandmother of three beautiful grandsons. She spends a great deal of time counselling and teaching the women of both the Heredia and the San Rafael churches. She does this in part through a weekly meeting of ladies who get together to do quilting with a lot of productions serving as evidence of their expertise.
